An excellent student and athlete, Erik was known for his selfless leadership, easy-going personality, and warm sense of humor. A graduate of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Erik went on to become a United States Navy SEAL.
On June 28, 2005, Erik was killed in action during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan. Erik had volunteered to lead a mission to help four fellow SEALs who had come under heavy fire. The helicopter that he, seven other Navy SEALs, and eight Army Special Forces members were in was shot down. Their sacrifice was portrayed in the best-selling book Lone Survivor, which was later adapted into the movie by the same name.
Erik’s family, classmates, and friends established a scholarship fund at Gonzaga that benefits students from military families. The Eric S. Kristensen Eye Street Klassic golf tournament raises money for the fund and celebrates Erik’s service to our nation and his love of life, family, and friends.
