Acceptable devices include Macbooks, Chromebooks, Windows laptops, Surface Pros, and Linux laptops. Any device running iOS (iPads), Android, or Amazon’s Fire OS, and secondary devices such as smartphones, eReaders, portable video game systems, or media players are not included in Gonzaga’s BYOD program and will not be acceptable as primary devices.
The following requirements represent a minimum standard. Most new laptops sold today meet these requirements, with few exceptions. Each student must bring a device that:
-
Runs one of the following operating systems: MacOS, ChromeOS, Windows, or Linux. (These are the operating systems that correspond with the acceptable devices above.)
-
Has a minimum battery life of six hours.
-
Has a minimum screen size of 10” (diagonal).
-
Has a physical keyboard.
-
Connects to wireless networks (WiFi). Verify with a salesperson that the device supports either 802.11N or 802.11AC networks.
-
Records both audio and video (Students will also bring either earbuds, headphones, or a headset).
At Gonzaga, we use Google Apps for Education and a learning management system called Canvas. Since both of these platforms can be accessed via an internet browser, there are no specific software requirements for devices.
Every student should have broadband Internet access outside of school, either through WiFi or through a physical connection, to complete homework assignments. This access can be at home, at a relative’s house, or at a public location such as a library or coffee shop. Gonzaga provides computer lab access from 7:30 AM until 4:00 PM on school days, and WiFi is available constantly at the school.
Calculator Policy UpdateFor students taking Algebra II or higher levels of Math, the HP Prime calculator is required. Students in Algebra I and Geometry are also strongly recommended to use this calculator as teachers will be using the HP Prime during certain lessons. Financial aid is available for these devices as necessary.
