Golf Starts 4-0, Beats Prep to Earn Hanagan's 100th Win
On March 13, Golf secured a thrilling 196-197 victory over Georgetown Prep. Max Lugar '26 sank a clutch par putt on the final hole to clinch the one-shot win. The Eagles' top scorers included VCU commit Carson Looney '25, who led the team with a 1-under 35, followed by Jake Lopes '27 with a 36. Lugar contributed a 40, Dev Saluja '25 shot a 42, and Teague Rezendez '26 rounded out the scoring with a 43. The match, hosted at Argyle Country Club, marked Coach Mike Hanagan’s 100th career victory as Gonzaga’s golf coach.
The event was organized by Ryan McCarthy (Gonzaga Class of 2008), a former classmate of both Coach Hanagan '08 and Athletic Director Terry Kernan '08. Ryan’s brother, Denny McCarthy (Georgetown Prep Class of 2011), currently competes on the PGA Tour and recently finished tied for 14th in The Players Championship, widely regarded as golf’s fifth major. Here's the winning putt by Lugar, along with some words from encouragement from McCarthy:
"It was a very special day for many reasons. The match took place at Argyle Country Club, where Joe Reyda '85 used to be a member, and was set up by Ryan McCarthy, the brother of Joe’s favorite pro golfer, Denny McCarthy," said Terry Kernan. "During our match, we even got to watch Denny play the famous 17th Green at TPC Sawgrass live on Ryan’s phone. The day concluded with a breathtaking sunset, something Joe always cherished. It truly felt as if his spirit was with us all day. The match culminated on the 9th green, where we made a putt to secure the win by one stroke, marking Coach Hanagan’s 100th career victory. It was a day full of memories, and I truly hope we can continue the tradition of hosting the Gonzaga vs. Prep golf match here for years to come."
The Eagles are 4-0 on the season with wins over St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (154-186), the win over Prep, and match play wins over Good Counsel (9-0) and The Heights (6.5-2.5). The team returns to the fairways on Monday, March 31 versus St. Mary's Ryken at Breton Bay. Click
