Basketball Begins Season Against National Powerhouses

Gonzaga varsity basketball opened the season in Miami in a a high school basketball showcase called the Army National Guard Main Event, where they faced two of the top teams in the country. On Friday, December 6 Gonzaga played Oak Ridge (FL) and led the Pioneers 29-28 at the half and 44-41 going into the 4th quarter. Strong defense from Alex Toumou '25 and Alex Gurdak '25, along with great shooting from Will Harper '25, Derek Dixon '25, and Nyk Lewis '25, powered the Eagles down the stretch to the solid season-opening win.

The next day, the much anticipated clash with preseason number one Columbus (FL) took place and did not disappoint. After trailing by two going into the fourth quarter, the Eagles led with less than a minute left only to see Columbus tie the game and force overtime. Both teams scored just 6 points in the first overtime, and both teams scored 11 in the second overtime. In the final seconds of the second extra period, Dixon seemingly hit the game winner as time expired; but the shot was waved off due to an inadvertent whistle. The Explorers went on to outscore the Eagles by six in the third overtime to take the victory.

The team returned to Eye Street and won their home opener versus Montgomery Blair on Monday, December 9, 83-43.  This weekend is the annual Gonzaga DC Classic in the Carmody Center. Click here to purchase tickets, and here to to watch live, produced by Gonzaga's Sports Broadcasting Club.
