Lacrosse Beats St. John's To Capture WCAC Championship
“Gonzaga lacrosse seizes the moment, topples rival St. John’s for WCAC title: The Eagles earned their first boys’ lacrosse title since 2019,” read the headline of the Washington Post on Monday, May 13.
In front of a capacity crowd at Georgetown University, Coach Jeff King’s team completed their quest to bring a championship back to Eye Street, ending the Cadets’ two-year run as league champions.
In the first quarter, Charlie McNamara '24, Freddie Fowler '24, and Cody Hobson '24 each scored their first of two goals. The Eagles came out strong to take a two goal lead early, but St. John's fought back to tie the game 3-3. A back and forth second quarter saw the Cadets score with :11 seconds left to take a 6-5 lead into halftime. We dominated the third quarter behind great faceoff play by Bobby McCarthy '25 to score five goals in a row and take a 10-6 lead. The Cadets scored late in the quarter to make it 10-7 heading into the final quarter.
After St. John's scored twice to make 10-9 with about 5 minutes remaining, Carter Cadin '25 found Chase Noyes '25 who netted our final goal on the night to make it 11-9. The Cadets scored once more, making the score 11-10. McCarthy won the ensuing faceoff, but the Cadets got a defensive stop to gain possession with a little over a minute remaining and a chance to tie the game. The Gonzaga defense stood tall in the final moments to capture the win.
Johnny Gardiner '24 and Robert Bath '24 each scored two goals on the night, and Caleb Oliver '25 added one. Goalie Kevin Kane '25 had 12 saves including two in the final minute. “It’s the best feeling ever,” Kane told the Post. “We’ve been working since September, early mornings just grinding for this moment. When it finally hit, it’s just the best feeling I could ever experience.” To read the full article, click here.
