Basketball Wins DC Classic and Beats St. John's

On December 8-10, Gonzaga hosted the annual DC Classic -- a three day, 12 game tournament. This year's tournament featured teams from the DMV, Chicago, northern Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The tournament, hosted by the Gonzaga Fathers Club (GFC), is 34 years old and the tagline for the event is "Good Basketball Supporting Great Works" because proceeds directly support Gonzaga's service projects for the current school year.

The Eagles defeated St. John's Catholic Prep (MD) 81-55, Georgetown Prep 72-58, and and Jackson reed 55-48 to win the championship for the third straight year. Gonzaga's Nic Lewis '25 was named the most outstanding player of the tournament.

The DC Classic program opens with a dedication to the late Mr. John McLaughlin (P '89, P '93, P '97), the founding chairman of the tournament, click here to read it. Additionally, three awards are presented each year by the GFC at halftime of the championship game. This year's Mike Kelleher Scholar Award was presented to Lucas Rohde '24. The Pedro Arrupe Service Award, awarded each year to a deserving alumnus who has exemplified a life as a true "Man for Others," was presented to Tricia Reyda on behalf of the late Joe Reyda '85. And the John McLaughlin Gonzaga DC Classic Award was presented to Stan Hodge (P '04) and John McMillian (P '98) for their many years of support of the tournament. On Wednesday, December 13, the Eagles were back in action in the Carmody Center for their home opener against WCAC rival St. John's. Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead and defeated the Cadets 71-59 in front of a capacity crowd. Here are some great photos from the game:
