Football Defeats McNamara, Good Counsel is Next
With a win over McNamara on Saturday, October 21, varsity Football improved to 6-2 on the year and 1-1 in WCAC play. The Eagles travelled to Forestville, MD to take on the Mustangs, and came away with a 17-8 win.
Gonzaga's offense used up most of the first quarter to score on its first drive with a two-yard TD run by Cody Hobson '24. The Eagles controlled the clock for the remainder of the half behind great offensive line play from Steele Dombo '24, and ran twice as many offensive plays as McNamara. But the score remained 7-0 late in the second quarter, with the Mustangs driving. Our defense stayed strong as the Mustangs moved the ball inside the 10 yard line, threatening to tie the game. With just 1 second left, the home team decided to try the short field goal. Kainoa Winston '25 blocked the attempt, and David Fred '25 scooped the ball up and took it 86 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-0 Gonzaga. John Holley's extra point gave Coach Trivers' team a 14-0 lead at halftime.
The start of the second half saw the Mustangs move the ball once again, this time inside the Eagle 10 yard line on two straight possessions. The defense surrendered no points on both drives, however. Kedric Golston '25 recovered a fumble on the first, and the Eagles forced a turnover on downs on the second. After a failed offensive possession by Gonzaga, the Eagles' special teams faltered by giving up a safety and giving McNamara their first points of the day. The Gonzaga kicking game, sparked by a great tackle by Mikey Settles '24, got redemption for the earlier mistake in the fourth quarter. Holley connected on a 37 yard field goal with nine minutes left to make the score 17-2. McNamara added a late touchdown, but the Eagles held on to earn their first WCAC win of the year.
