Soccer Wins DCSAA Championship to Cap Historic Season
Gonzaga Soccer took on Washington International School for the DCSAA Championship on Sunday, November 13th at Catholic University. The game was the culmination of a long, successful season, with the team hoping to cap a great year with its best record in program history.
Both teams strapped in for a tough physical match which was deadlocked 0-0 at half. Eighteen minutes into the second half, Kevin Coffey '23 made a move in the box and got fouled by a WIS defender that would result in a penalty kick. Head Coach Waller called on midfielder Colin Prendergast '23 to take the penalty who nailed the ball into the side netting. The Eagles threatened multiple times while holding off WIS counters to equalize. In the end, we defeated Washington International 1-0 to record the 17th shutout of the year. Gonzaga allowed a total of nine goals all season and only three in WCAC play.
Goalie Tommy McKinnon '23 was named MVP by the DCSAA tournament. “This is a special group of kids who just came together to play their favorite sport,” McKinnon told the Washington Post. “It’s amazing what we did together.”

When asked to reflect back on the season, Coach Waller said, “We always know that the schedule is going to be hard.
