In Their Shoes: Students Envision Life as a Refugee

Yesterday, Mrs. Shannon Berry welcomed two representatives from the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) to speak with students from the Ecological Justice Class and the Global Scholars Program. Ms. Clara Sayans talked about the global refugee crisis, focusing on climate displacement, the legal gaps in refugee protections, and the need for advocacy. Powerful poetry and personal testimonies highlighted the deep impact of forced migration on people around the world.

Mr. Tevfik Karatop then guided students through Journey into Exile, an interactive exhibit that allowed students to develop a deeper understanding of the experience of refugees and displaced people from around the world, including the reasons they might leave their homes in the first place as well as the experiences and choices they might have to make along their journeys. The activity included the testimonies and stories of real refugees with whom JRS has worked and offered students a deeper understanding of the way climate change impacts people's need to flee their homes.

Said Mrs. Berry: "I believe this activity is important to help our students gain a deeper understanding of the dignity of every human person, regardless of nationality or citizenship and so grow in empathy and compassion towards displaced people throughout the world."
