McElhennon ’20 Named Gatorade D.C. Cross Country Runner Of The Year
Gavin McElhennon ’20 and his Gonzaga varsity Cross Country teammates won the 2017 WCAC Championship, the first since 2012, and their second straight DCSAA State Title. Gavin was named 1st Team All-Met in December, and on February 12, he became the third Gatorade D.C. Runner of the Year in school history.
“As a freshman, Gavin was consistently the number eight runner on a deep team, but this year he emerged as our top runner, leading the way in every race,” said Gonzaga Cross Country Head Coach John Ausema. “He works hard in practice and sets the tone for the rest of the team, and he has a great innate racing sense. I’m excited to see what he can do the next two years.” Click here to read the full press release from Gatorade.
The 5-foot-10, 130-pound sophomore raced to the D.C. State Athletic Association individual championship this past season with a time of 16:34. McElhennon also won the Pacers Running DCXC Invitational, while placing second at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships, fourth at the Glory Days Invitational and seventh at the Jesuit championships.
