Gonzaga Community Celebrates Charter Day

On Friday, May 3, the Gonzaga community gathered in St. Al's Church for the annual Charter Day assembly, a longstanding tradition to commemorate school history and honor the many accomplishments of students, faculty and staff. Students were recognized for achievements in academics, arts, service, athletics, and more. Faculty and staff celebrating milestone anniversaries were cheered enthusiastically for their devotion to the school.

 

The Herlihy Award recognizes a faculty or staff member who embodies the qualities of excellence as a Jesuit educator, as well as loyalty, devotion, and a spirit of service. This year, Athletic Director and Math teacher Mr. Terry Kernan ‘08 received this honor, which is determined by a vote of the faculty.

The President’s Eagle Award was presented to Fr. Pat Nolan, S.J., Director of Campus Ministry and Ignatian Identity, and Fr. Mark Horak, S.J., Religion teacher and athletic chaplain, for their outstanding dedication and service to Gonzaga. Both will unfortunately be departing Gonzaga for new Jesuit assignments after this school year and will be greatly missed. Father Lingan offered his gratitude to them both on behalf of the entire school community.

Twenty-one members of the faculty and staff were also recognized for milestone anniversaries of service to Gonzaga, beginning with five years, and culminating in an incredible 45 years of service for Computer Science and Math teacher Mr. Mark Howell ‘73.

The festivities were made all the more significant by the musical talents of the Chamber Choir, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir. We hope you enjoy this video recap and photo album from this festive and wonderful day. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees!
